For the exploration of a networked business idea, easily understandable description techniques are needed. Persons are involved with no background knowledge in conceptual modeling techniques at all and with no time nor inclination to learn these techniques. Hence, e3value concepts are as simple as possible.

The e3value methodology offers two integrated techniques to conceptualize network businesses: (1) the value hierarchy technique and (2) the value web technique. In short, a value hierarchy shows how a need of a consumer can be satisfied by obtaining goods and/or services. Additionally, such goods or services may require other goods and services themselves. These are also shown in a value hierarchy. A value web shows how these goods and services are created, distributed and consumed in a network of enterprises and consumers.
